About Dr. Kalpana Sankar

Dr. Kalpana SankarDr. Kalpana Sankar is an expert in participatory assessment, gender differentiated impact and monitoring tools and indicators. She has been involved in the women’s self-help group movement in Tamil Nadu for over two decades. She is a doctorate in Physical Sciences and in Women’s Studies and Self-Help Groups.

Dr. Kalpana was Consultant with the Government of South Africa and has supported microfinance and poverty reduction programmes in Afghanistan and Brazil. She is also the Managing Director of Belstar Investment and Finance Ltd, the NBFC arm of Hand in Hand India.

Dr Kalpana was a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Tamil Nadu. She has handled several international missions as Consultant for UNOPS, UNDP, Christian Aid and Wetlands International. Dr Kalpana has also authored various publications and manuals on child labour, microfinance and self-help groups. She has guided interns from Stanford University, Stockholm School of Economics and students of Indian universities on microfinance. She was the first recipient of a scholarship to pursue an Executive MBA from TRIUM, an alliance among NYU Stern School of Business, London School of Economics and Political Science, and HEC School of Management Paris, and graduated in 2012.

Dr. Kalpana was awarded the “Nari Shakti Puraskar 2016″ from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, for her contribution to the empowerment of vulnerable and marginalized women. The award was presented by the Hon’ble President of India Mr Pranab Mukherjee on International Women’s Day on March 8, 2017.

Dr Kalpana also received the “Special Commendation Certificate” for Hand in Hand India’s pioneering work in the SHG movement by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The award was presented to Hand in Hand India for its contribution in enrolling more than 14 lakh women in over 1,10,000 Self Help Groups across India and for its support in mobilizing Rs. 625 crores of savings, the building block of sustainability of the SHG movement. Hand in Hand India’s credit linkage and enterprise development support has enabled SHG women to transform into micro-entrepreneurs and start contributing to the local economy. The Award was presented by Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Shri Edappadi Palaniswami at NABARD’s 36th Foundation Day and Silver Jubilee ceremony.
